Ford has started working on a digital child body model to better understand the effects of car crashes on youngsters. The model will be created from MRI scans of real children and used in computerized crash tests to see how accidents specifically effect small kids. Ford hopes the model will significantly help reduce injury rates for children in car accidents.

The child model is a continuation of an adult model project that Ford's been working on for more than a decade. Like the digital adult, the child's skeleton and vital organs will be painstakingly rendered to make sure they're as near-to-life as can be. According to Ford, the technology has already been put to good use designing better restraints, but there's always more to be learned.
