New Hybrid Furniture: the Press Stuul by Melissa Moore of Nikkuu Design

Where does furniture and lamp design end and the realm of subtle installation art begin? Generally it seems to begin today with the work of US based designer Melissa Moore, whose Nikkuu Design has been producing a very exciting line of products that are not only artful but also highlight functionality and beauty. Moore’s focus is to create non-traditional lighting elements and furnishings that actually showcase and expose the utilitarian nature of the products.

Imaginative reconfigurations of objects and re-evaluations of space show up as sub-texts in her work. The Press Stuul is a reconfigurable modern seating element that is as much sculptural and architectural object as it is a representation of function and comfort. The Press Stuul is conceptually fashioned after a plant press used for preserving flowers and plants. It’s fabricated from re-claimed pine blocks, pegs and industrial ratchet systems that hold the stool together using lateral pressure.

The versatility of the Press Stuul allows it to be used as single stool or purchased as a dual seat furnishing. Since it is part of their “hybrid furniture” line, it also includes a removable lamp insert (part of Nikkuu’s Mizuu line of lamps). The Press Stuul is yet another example of conceptually rich, unique, and simply beautiful products from this innovative new company.
